DEPARTMENT OF CARDIO VASCULAR THORASIC SURGERY [CVTS]


The department of CVTS is performing both open heart and other thoracic surgical procedures. Open heart surgical procedures include most of the congenital cardiac anomalies like repair of atrial septal defects, ASD with PAPVC, endocardial cushion defects, associated valvular anomalies, ventricular septal defects. Other surgeries include those for pulmonic stenosis, tetrology of fallot, aortopulmonary window, single ventricle, sub-aortic LVOTO excision, Ebstein anomaly correction, repair and or replacement of valves like mitral valve, tricuspid valve repair, pulmonary valve repair, mitral valve replacement, aortic valve replacement, double valve replacements with or without tricuspid valve repair at the same time, cardiac tumours like artrial myxomas etc. Closed heart surgical & thoracic surgical procedures are also being conducted. Post-doctoral, postgraduate and under-graduate teaching & training constitute important academic activity in the department.

• Expression analysis of VEGF and VEGFR Family in Bronchogenic Carcinoma- as a Co-guide in postdoctoral thesis in collaboration with Department of Biotechnology, University of Kashmir.
• Pulmonary hypertension in Atrial Septal defect in patients from high altitude in Kashmir: A prospective study.
• Surgical management of Multisystemic Hydatid disease and Scope of single stage ministernotomy: A prospective study.
• Surgical excision as primary modality of treatment for Small Cell Carcinoma of lung: A prospective study.
• Long term patency in on-pump V/S off pump CABG: A prospective study.
• A no. of projects under process in collaboration with Department of Biochemistry & Department of Biotechnology, Kashmir University.

Performed first "Aortic Arch Aneurysm Surgery" at SKIMS.
Performed first "Surgical Carotid Endasterectomy" at SKIMS.
Performed first Successful "CABG on Cardiopulmonary Bypass" at SKIMS on 23rd May, 2005.
Performed first "trans-atrial VSD closure in June, 2005 at SKIMS.
Performed first "trans-atrial/trans-pulmonary total correction of Tetralogy of Fallot”, in 2008 at SKIMS.
Performed first ever tracheal stent at SKIMS on 23rd July, 2003.
Performed first “Carotid Aneuresectomy for Internal carotid artery aneurysm” at SKIMS.
Performed first “Revasculaization in Bilateral Renal Artery Stenosis on 13th May, 2004 at SKIMS.
Performed first minimally invasive “Transthoracic-transphrenotomy for concurrent hydatid lung/liver” at SKIMS, published in British Journal of Surgery in 2005.
Performed first “Bilateral Single Stage Minimally invasive thoracotomy for bilateral pulmonary hydatid disease”, published in Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular surgery in 2002.
Performed first “Single stage ministernotomy for mutisysyemic hydatid disease” at SKIMS.
Performed first “femoral-femoral bypass grafting” in 2004 at SKIMS.
Performed first ever operation for Budd-Chiari Syndrome at SKIMS in 2010.
Accomplished projects with modern concepts on “Neo-adjuvant chemotherapy in squamous cell carcinoma of Esophagus and lung”, first time   at SKIMS which got published in leading international journals.
Delivered a number of lectures during international conferences as a guest speaker.
Invited as “Guest speaker” in 15th World Congress of International Association of Surgeons and Gastroenterologists (IASG) in Prague, Czech Republic in September, 2005.
Invited as “Guest speaker” in 18th World Congress of Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons, Greece, 2008.
Invited to 42nd World Congress of Surgery of International Society, Canada, 2007.
Invited for 16th Annual meeting of Asian Society of Cardiovascular Surgery, 2008.
