DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL ONCOLOGY

The department provides comprehensive treatment for cancer patients. All the patients referred to this department from various hospitals in the state with a possibility of various malignant diseases are adequately worked up for confirmation of the diagnosis, subtyping of the diseases and staging which is essential before deciding any treatment modality. The department offers a referral clinic services on six days per week basis.

The department of Medical Oncology has developed into a major facility to provide comprehensive treatment for cancer patients and acts as a referral center in J&K state. The patients with suspicion of cancer are being investigated to confirm the diagnosis. They are then further worked up for subtyping and staging of the disease which is essential for deciding optimal treatment.

The department offers referral clinic service 6 days every week. In addition the department runs joint tumor clinics with the Department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Radiation Oncology and Radio Diagnosis. Besides the department runs outpatient chemotherapy services daily in the day care ward. The day care ward is run 7 days a week from 08:00 AM to 08:00 PM. On an average, around 50 to 60 patients are attended in one day for chemotherapy as well as supportive treatment. Supportive care in the form of blood transfusions, fresh frozen plasma and platelet concentrates are also instituted in the day care ward.

In patient services are run round the clock in new block in the fourth floor with cubicles having bed strength of 4-6. Sixteen beds are earmarked for Oncology. In addition there is one cubical with single bed occupancy with isolation facility for barrier nursing where severely Tem Cell Transplant patients are managed. Leukemia and lymphoma patients are exclusively treated in the department with various internationally based treatment protocols. On an average 550 patients are administered chemotherapy every month. Advanced cancer patients are treated with best supportive care.

The department has started stem cell transplant facility and presently 11 patients of multiple myeloma underwent the procedure with success. This facility is being extended to lymphomas and pediatric malignancies as well. The goal being allogeneic bone marrow transplant in future. Besides cell separator is being regularly used for platelet phoresis and plasma phoresis. Because of the expected heavy load of patients for these processes, another cell separator is being procured by the department.

A Post-Doctoral (DM) course is also being run and at present three post-doctoral scholars are undergoing training in the department.

The various research protocols run in the department are:-

1. EGFR mutation in non-squamous NSCLC.

2. Impact of chemotherapy on quality of life in Gastric Cancer.

3. Comparative evaluation of post-mastectomy Stage III breast cancer in post-menopausal women treated with radiation therapy and hormones versus hormones alone.

4. Impact of neo-adjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer in pre-menopausal women in State I, II and III.

5. Clinical profile of multiple myeloma in Kashmir.

6. The effect of cytoreductive surgery in advanced ovarian cancer.

7. Taxol and cisplatin vs cisplatin and cyclophosphamide as adjuvant chemotherapy in cancer ovary.
