SKIMS Achieves Another Milestone, Conducts First Haplo Bone Marrow Transplant (Half Match)

The first time in the UT of J&K half match Bone Marrow Transplant (Haplo Transplant) has been successfully done in child of eight years, from Banihal, who was suffering from a rare disorder called congenital HLH for which only curative treatment is Bone marrow transplant.

Director SKIMS/ EOSG Prof. Ashraf Ganie  lauded the department for conducting the procedure. Such procedures and treatment facility available at SKIMS provide major relief to patients. “It is our endeavour to keep every facility required for the best patient care here at SKIMS. Outside Kashmir, patients have to pay exorbitant rates for such procedures,” he added.
He maintained that patient care being the top priority and major thrust area of my administration, all ours efforts are directed to provide major facilities to patients suffering from life threatening diseases.  The first pediatric bone marrow transplant done successfully and many complex procedures in SKIMS exhibits the expertise of the Institute with  state of art set-up available for such patients, otherwise they have to go outside for such treatments.

Prof Javid Rasool,HOD, Department of Clinical Hematology & BMT informed that the donor of the patient was his father and the BMT was carried successfully by the Department of Clinical Hematology and BMT. This complex case was treated with a combination of drugs and Total Body Irradiation (TBI) using ionizing radiation. The TBI was jointly done by department of Radiation Oncology led by Prof Malik Tariq and his team and department of Radiological Physics led by Prof Mohibul Haq . This radiation procedure is highly complex procedure involving irradiation of entire body. This was first patient treated In Jammu & Kashmir ,UT who received this highly Complex procedure.

On an average Haplo Transplant outside SKIMS will cost minimum of 25-30 lacs where as in SKIMS, total cost of the procedure was 4-5 lacs. This will pave the way for half matched transplant in UT of J & K especially for patients who are not having fully matched donor and have limited finances, he added.

The Department of Clinical Hematology thanked SKIMS administration for providing all administrative support for carrying first time Haplo Transplant, they also thanked to other supportive departments including BT & IH, Microbiology, Radiation Oncology and other allied specialties
