The Department of Emergency Medicine was established on June 27, 2012, and operates 24x7 to provide emergency care for acutely ill patients, whether they are first-time visitors or referrals for higher-level care. These include victims of road accidents, violence, medical emergencies, and critically ill patients referred from other institutions.
Department Structure and Services: - Staff: The department is staffed by faculty (professor, additional professors, and assistant professors), senior residents, postgraduates, DNB fellows, junior residents, nurses, and paramedics to deliver emergency care. - Capacity: The department can accommodate around 130 patients at a time - Emergency Operations: It has an emergency operation theatre with three tables for immediate surgical interventions and minor procedures. - Equipment: High-end equipment includes defibrillators, ventilators, cardiac monitors, infusion pumps, NIVs, HFNCs, and nebulizers for managing critically ill patients.
Diagnostic Facilities: Diagnostic services available round the clock include: - Routine blood/body fhuid investigations - X-Ray, Ultrasound, ECG - CT Scan and MRI
Patient Volume: The annual patient load has been steadily increasing, with approximately 192,698 patients visiting the emergency department in the year 2022-2023, resulting in 22,225 admissions. The average daily patient volume is around 600-700 with around 10% being admitted of these visiting patients.
Patient Management: - Medical Emergencies: Patients are filtered at Level-1 (Triage and filter clinic), then moved to medical reception for acute care, monitoring, and potential admission. - Surgical Emergencies: Surgical cases are handled at the surgical reception, where they receive acute care and undergo potential interventions before being transferred for observation and recovery. They may also be referred to super specialty wards for expert management in collaboration with the emergency department.
Teaching and Training: The department is actively involved in teaching and training: - Postgraduates (medical and surgical) are posted on a rotational basis - DNB Emergency Medicine course has been offered since 2021, with an intake capacity of two students per session - Training programs for junior residents, nursing staff, and paramedics help ensure the delivery of effective emergency care. - Regular mortality meetings, grand round presentations, and departmental lectures are held to enhance learning and improve care.
This integrated approach ensures the department's ability to provide comprehensive emergency services under one roof, combining medical and surgical care with essential diagnostic support.
