SKIMS Medical College Conducts Training for Medical Officers under National Programme on Climate Change and Human Health in Budgam

Srinagar 10th July 2025:
The Department of Community Medicine, SKIMS Medical College, Bemina Srinagar, in collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Budgam, successfully conducted a one-day training programme for Medical Officers of District Budgam under the National Programme on Climate Change and Human Health (NPCCHH). The training was held at the Government Nursing Training School, Budgam, and was attended by over 20 Medical Officers from various blocks of the district.

The training aimed to equip frontline healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills to respond effectively to climate-sensitive health challenges, in view of the increasing frequency of extreme weather events in the Kashmir Valley.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Gulzar Ahmad Dar, Chief Medical Officer, Budgam, who highlighted the growing relevance of climate change-related health interventions and urged healthcare professionals to remain proactive and informed. Dr. Lahut Hassan, District Health Officer, welcomed the participants and ensured all logistical arrangements for the smooth conduct of the training.

Dr. Maqsood-us-Hasan, Divisional Nodal Officer, NPCCHH, provided a comprehensive overview of the programme, emphasizing its strategic objectives and the critical need for timely action across health systems to build climate resilience.

The technical sessions were led by eminent faculty members from the Department of Community Medicine, SKIMS Medical College:
Dr. Yasmeen Jan, Associate Professor, delivered an in-depth presentation on Heat-Related Illnesses and their management.
Dr. Beenish Mushtaq, Assistant Professor, elaborated on Air Pollution-Related Illnesses and their preventive strategies.

Prof. Ashfaq Ahmad Bhat shared insights on Green and Climate-Resilient Healthcare Infrastructure, highlighting aspects such as energy efficiency, water conservation, smart building design, and green landscapes.

The training concluded with remarks by Dr. Ausaf Geelani, who encouraged participants to share ground-level challenges and assured that efforts will be made to address them on priority. He also expressed hope for continued collaboration between SKIMS Medical College and the District Health Authorities on future initiatives of public health relevance.

This initiative underscores SKIMS Medical College’s commitment to strengthening healthcare capacities in the region and contributing meaningfully to national climate-health resilience efforts.
